CHICAGO - For much of the night, it looked as if Jonas Hiller was the only player on the ice for Calgary. The Chicago Blackhawks kept pressuring the veteran goaltender, and he turned them away over and over again.Playing on weary legs at the very end, Hiller stuck around long enough to get his first win for the Flames.Hiller made 49 saves and Mikael Backlund scored at 4:35 of overtime, lifting Calgary to a 2-1 victory at Chicago on Wednesday.Tonight was probably not our best effort, but we found a way and worked hard and got better the longer the game went, said Hiller, who began his career with Anaheim and signed a $9 million, two-year contract with Calgary in July.Dennis Wideman also scored for the Flames, who were coming off a 3-2 shootout win at Nashville on Tuesday. The Blackhawks controlled the action for much of the game, enjoying a whopping 50-18 advantage in shots on goal. But Hiller was outstanding and Backlund used a wrist shot to beat Corey Crawford on the goaltenders glove side for his first goal of the season.I was happy that we didnt have to go to the shootout, Hiller said. I had a little tired legs there at the end.Andrew Shaw scored in the third period and Crawford had 16 saves in Chicagos first loss in three games. The overtime began with a nice stop by Crawford on Paul Byrons breakaway opportunity just 40 seconds into the extra period. Brad Richards had a chance to win the game for the Blackhawks, but his tip off a nice pass from Duncan Keith went wide. They stole the game, Chicagos Marian Hossa said. We had so many shots after the first period, and we just kept going. We played well, but we couldnt put the puck in the net. Their goalie, he deserves all the credit. The Blackhawks played keepaway for much of the first two periods, but Hiller stepped up and the Flames jumped in front at 11:55 of the second. Joe Colborne won a faceoff with Jonathan Toews and sent the puck back to Wideman, who let loose with a long slap shot that went off the stick of Blackhawks rookie Trevor van Riemsdyk and into the net. That was the only goal until the Blackhawks were successful on their seventh power play with 5:45 left in regulation. With Wideman in the penalty box for hooking, Shaw tipped Patrick Sharps long slap shot past Hiller for his second goal.Chicago had a couple chances for the tiebreaking score in regulation, but was unable to connect. Hiller stopped Patrick Kanes backhander in the final seconds. Our best shots, we probably had six or seven A-plus chances that didnt even get a shot on net, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. We were looking for a better play, missed shot, blocked, too tight or missed the net. Those were the ones that didnt even add up on the scoresheet as far as shots. But those were the quality chances we missed. The Blackhawks outshot the weary Flames 18-2 in the first, but Hillers solid play kept the game scoreless. He stopped an open Kane with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the opening period, and denied Jeremy Morin on consecutive shots in the second.Daniel Carcillo also misplayed a prime opportunity 6 1/2 minutes into the game after Ben Smiths drive and dish created an open side of the net for the winger. Sharp had a nice look in the second, and then slammed his stick against the glass after Hiller made the save.We played with fire, Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. Hills gave us an unbelievable game and our penalty killing I think was the story with Jonas performance. Before Widemans goal in the second, the Flames best scoring opportunity was Byrons short-handed breakaway midway through the first. Byron beat Crawford, but he shot it off the inside of the right post.Calgary had another good look five minutes into the second, but Crawford was there to stop Brian McGrattan.NOTES: LW Brandon Bollig played 7 1/2 minutes in his first game in Chicago since he was traded to Calgary in June. Ellis made 26 saves against his former team in his 14th career shutout, and Trevor Daley scored in the Stars 2-0 victory over the Ducks on Saturday night. Ellis played in 23 games as a backup in Anaheim from February 2011 to 2012, but did his best work while absorbing innumerable shots in practice from Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne. Ellis used that familiarity throughout his second victory over the Ducks this season, even denying Perrys point-blank chance in the final minute by getting an outstretched pad in front of an open net. "Ive practiced with them, and I understand some things they like to do," Ellis said with a smile. Captain Jamie Benn added an empty-net goal with 28 seconds left for the Stars, who snapped a five-game road skid with one of their biggest wins of a mediocre season. Ellis had sat out the Stars previous nine games since Jan. 12, and he acknowledged a bit of game rust in his return. But Kari Lehtonens veteran backup posted Dallas third shutout victory in its last six games, and coach Lindy Ruff said Ellis probably will get more playing time in the final week before Lehtonen and Ruff head to the Olympics. "He gave us a rock-solid game," Ruff said of Ellis. "We only had a couple of big breakdowns, and he was there for us." After the game, Ellis met up in the hallway between the dressing rooms with Jonas Hiller, the Ducks starter during Ellis time with the club. "I loved my time here," Ellis said. "Its still the best place Ive ever played and lived in, but it was good to get these two points for us." Hiller stopped 25 shots for the NHL-leading Ducks, who were shut out for the first time all season. Anaheim has lost three of five at Honda Center after opening the season 20-0-2 at home. At the start of a four-game stretch over eight days before the Olympic break, the grind of the regular season is finally hitting the Ducks aafter two spectacular months.ddddddddddddAnaheim is 4-4 since Jan. 15, but still five points ahead of defending champion Chicago atop the overall standings. "We didnt have any sustained pressure," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Against a team like Dallas, you have to win the board battles. If you dont win them, their speed is so good, its going to be a real tough game for you." The Ducks played without third-leading scorer Nick Bonino after the versatile centre injured his wrist. Boudreau also scratched healthy offence-minded forwards Dustin Penner and Kyle Palmieri. While Anaheims roll has slowed, Dallas is looking to build momentum into the break during a three-game West Coast trip over the next five days. The Stars began the day in an 11th-place tie in the Western Conference. After a scoreless first period, Daley got his fourth goal of the season early in the second on the rebound of a shot by centre Cody Eakin, who blew by Patrick Maroon to create the chance. Only Hiller kept the score close with a handful of stellar plays in the final two periods, including a post-to-post toe save on Rich Peverley late in the second. Hiller has lost his last three home starts after his franchise-record 14-game winning streak ended last month. "It seems like one game we play pretty good, then the next game it seems like weve lost everything again," Hiller said. "We dont have that consistency. You cant just always think you can come back in the third period to win a game." Anaheim had several decent chances in the final minutes, but was shut out for the first time since last March 27. The Ducks also lost defenceman Mark Fistric to a lower-body injury early in the game. NOTES: Along with Bonino, the Ducks had three prominent healthy scratches who have combined for 90 points this season: Penner, Palmieri and D Bryan Allen. ... Just 41 seconds in, Eakin skated to the Stars dressing room with a bloody cut on his face after he got hit by the puck. He returned for the second period. ... Daley has three goals in his last 10 games after scoring just once in his first 31 this season.
